Merle Haggard's 'I Am What I Am' Is Simply Pure Hag

Today's Country Music Videos is proud to introduce Judy Core, a guest album reviewer, who recently reviewed Merle Haggard's new album titled I Am What I Am for us:

I’m embarrassed to state this, but I am a newcomer to Merle Haggard. It is true, so I can’t deny it. There is a lot of labeling in our little genre of country music. We have traditional country, rock country, alt country, Americana, bluegrass, pop-country, outlaw country, cross over country and well, the list goes on.

I think, but perhaps not accurately, that the left end of the spectrum is ‘pop-country’ or ‘that’s not country music, that’s pop music, so why the hell is [insert artist name] even claiming to be country”. Then the right end of the spectrum is ‘three chords and the truth country', outlaw country, real country, and even Hag would be proud to call that [insert artist name] country” type of country music. Or perhaps they are flip flopped. Either way, someone, somewhere, will judge your ‘legitimacy’ as a country music aficionado by where you fall on this spectrum. I’m ashamed that it took me this long to find Merle Haggard. But, now that I'm here, I’m home for good.

Live and Love Always is my absolute favorite track. Theresa Haggard sings on it with her husband and their voices are a natural fit. It reminds me of Johnny and June singing Jackson and Loretta and Conway singing Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man. Simple and pure, it stands on its own like good country music of days gone by. A man and his guitar, it’s all that is needed.

The entire album reflects where the artist is at this point in his life. He makes it easy to feel his discontent, but he is not the fightin’ young man of the past. I’ve Seen It Go Away has the somber tone that only comes from a life well lived and the wisdom of age. But like a wonderful, rich, deep red wine becomes better over time, the songs about love and relationships reflect the stability and depth that come from a 16+ year marriage. He wraps it all up, in true Hag style, in the tune I Am What I Am. He is a man that has always taken responsibility for his own actions whether good or bad. That is a character trait that is a rare find these days.

Simple and pure, it’s exactly what you would want and wish for in a new Merle Haggard release. He’s not filled with the raw pain like the late Johnny Cash's release of Hurt. Hag is what he has always been; he is just a man with a guitar. I Am What I Am is perfect in every way.

Purchase I Am What I Am from Amazon or Download the MP3 version from iTunes.

Determined Jake Owen Fan Chronicles Her "Shhh ... It Happens" Day on YouTube

Country music lover Kelly Jean was determined to see Jake Owen last weekend and didn't let a broken-down car, faulty GPS, bad directions or a scary neighborhood keep her from her man.

She scored front row seats for the Sugarland/Jake Owen concert and had been looking forward to the show for months. So when her day started to go very, very wrong, she kept her sense of humor and refused to give up. Not only did she get to the concert, she also got a little extra love from country hottie Jake.

Kelly chronicled her journey from Long Island to Camden, New Jersey -- a trip that should have taken two hours but ended up taking 11! -- in a very funny video on YouTube.

Whitney Duncan's 'Right Road Now' Album Surprises Our Senior Music Reviewer

Whitney Duncan’s "Right Road Now" Should Take Her Where She Needs to Go
by: Vicky Dobbin, Senior Music Reviewer

45th Annual Academy Of Country Music Awards - Arrivals
I must admit that I misjudged Whitney Duncan. After my first viewing of her video “Skinny Dippin’,” I assumed she was just another one of the pretty girls with minor singing ability that Nashville tries to sell through music videos. (Thanks, Shania, for giving them that idea.)

You can hardly blame me for my assumption. “Skinny Dippin'” did very little to highlight Whitney’s voice and instead relied on the cuteness factor to gain attention. It was hit a hit on music video channels but didn’t even break the top 40. I don’t think I ever heard it on the radio but it seemed to be on CMT and GAC every hour. So my first listen to her new CD, “Right Road Now,” was a pleasant surprise.

Whitney has a strong, soulful voice and she handles bluesy ballads and up tempo honky tonk tunes with equal skill and beauty. And I’m not talking about her looks. She has a beautiful voice that is a cut above many of the female singers getting airplay today.

CD highlights include “Burn it Down,” a broken-heart ballad sung with the power of you’d expect from Martina McBride; the bluesy “Little By Little”; and the sassy, up tempo “The Bed That You Made” – my pick as the best song on the CD, it would make a great single (and yes, video).

Whitney has been in Nashville for six years working on the overnight success – and getting this-close several times (a duet with Kenny Rogers, finishing 5th on Nashville Star, opening the CMA Fest). She’s obviously put the time to good use. Many of the songs on the CD, all of which she co-wrote, display range and maturity.

The current single, the title track “Right Road Now,” isn’t as powerful as the songs just mentioned, and the video looks like something Carrie Underwood would have done a few years back – not bad, a bit clichéd and not terribly memorable.

A few of the songs on CD do start to sound alike after a few listens but overall “Right Road Now” is a welcome addition to my CD collection. Whitney Duncan is an emerging talent and while that overnight success may take another CD or two to reach, I think she’ll get there.

Lady Antebellum Performing Need You Now On American Idol - An Ironic Moment For Hillary Scott

During country night on American Idol recently, Lady A. performed their smash hit Need You Now. As usual, they did a fantastic job. The ironic part of their performance was Hillary auditioned for American Idol twice in the past and never made it past the first round. Guess it was meant to be because if she had made it onto the show, she probably would have went solo and may have never experienced the success she now has with Lady A.

So, for all you American Idol first round rejects, don't fret. You can still make it. Just find an extremely tall male lead singer to sing with, and a bearded multi-talented musician to play with, and you'll be all set.

Brad Paisley Writes About The Nashville Floods And Puts Everything Into Perspective

Nashville flooded after rainstorm
On Friday, Brad Paisley released an article about his experiences during the recent Nashville flood.

Nashville Pulls Together To Weather The Storm

"While I was busy placing buckets under the leaks in our home in Franklin, Tenn., my entire stage and set for my new tour was waiting in downtown Nashville, with rehearsals set for May 3.

By that morning, however, it would all be under four feet of water. At another facility, all my guitars, amps, effects, cases, cables -- essentially everything I tour with -- would suffer the same fate.

I'm not alone. Vince Gill, Keith Urban, Brent Mason, John Fogerty and countless others lost instruments and more. And the most heartbreaking of all was the sight of a johnboat floating down the aisle of the Grand Ole Opry.

But then the sun came out. And as Nashville started to dry, something beautiful began to happen. Volunteers, youth groups and churches flooded streets just like the Harpeth and Cumberland Rivers had only hours before. There wasn't any looting to speak of, no anger even.

Everywhere I went I saw determination in the wake of tragedy. And the music community took the ball and began to run. Businesses on Music Row closed so their employees could volunteer. Gill led a local telethon. Others like Taylor Swift donated large sums of money. Myself, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill and others made the rounds on national news programs trying to raise awareness. The Opry moved into another building temporarily, and the show went on.

Money is still being raised, benefit concerts continue to be planned, and from what I saw absolutely no one is taking this lying down. As the national media began to take notice, I think the world got a good look at our town, our music and our heart. I even got a call from President Barack Obama checking on the Opry and our city and pledging the government's help. What began as devastation became an opportunity. A chance for growth. And the real Nashville is on display in a way that can only be seen in times of adversity. And it is handling all of it with grace.

As I write this, I'm just exhausted. We begin rehearsals tomorrow, 10 days late. However, in a strange way, I know someday this is going to be one of my fondest memories of touring.

That seems strange, I know. But we learned about ourselves this week. I mean, my crew stood in knee-deep water lifting every last piece of equipment they could save. Then they lined up for tetanus shots. Bo O'Brien lost his jeep trying to haul off video gear, Mike Garibedian single-handedly saved our monitor rig lifting one piece at a time. And now we're all scrambling to pull off the miracle of making it still work. We've always been a close group, but now we're WWII close.

It's a funny thing, this music business. All of us lucky enough to be a part of it can be spoiled brats at times. Like our ridiculous tour riders stating "absolutely no blue M&Ms." Artists can lose sight of their priorities, myself included.

But as I write this, I am far from worried about meaningless amenities. When I finally walk out onstage in Virginia Beach, Va., on the first date of the H2O tour -- no need to point out the irony, thank you -- it will mean so much more to all of us than any other tour we've ever done. Or probably ever will. I will stand up there more thankful than I've ever been for the people in the audience, the band at my back, the crew that makes it happen and the town I've never been prouder to represent."

(Brad Paisley is a country singer-songwriter and guitarist whose latest album is "American Saturday Night.")

New Music - Sarah Darling - Whenever It Rains - Official Music Video

I enjoy featuring new artists on the site. I wasn't very familiar with Sarah Darling until seeing this video this morning. I'm going to let CMT's biography on Sarah tell you more about her. As you'll read below, you might recognize her face from either Kellie Pickler's Red High Heels video or Big and Rich's Save A Horse (Ride A Cowboy) video:

From CMT.com:

Sarah Darling was born in Des Moines, Iowa, and raised in a small Iowa town as an only child. Her earliest exposure to country music came on Sunday mornings when her grandfather would listen to the radio while driving her to church. She grew up writing poetry and eventually gravitated toward writing songs.

On her 14th birthday, she received a small sound system and began singing locally at weddings, birthdays, talent shows, pageants and the Iowa State Fair. In 2002, a year after graduating from high school, Darling saved $5,000 and packed up everything she owned in a horse trailer to head to Nashville to pursue her music career. In 2003, she auditioned for The Entertainer, an E! Entertainment Television reality series hosted by Wayne Newton. After spending eight weeks living at the Las Vegas Hilton while competing for a performing contract, she finished in the Top 3. Newton took her aside one day to say she was his favorite singer on the show -- but added that she didn't belong in Las Vegas. He suggested returning to Nashville to concentrate on country music. She spent the next three years writing songs and performing in local clubs.

While supporting herself with a job as a waitress, Darling also found work as a model and appeared in several music videos, including Kellie Pickler's "Red High Heels," Joe Nichols' "Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off" and Big & Rich's "Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy)." After hearing her original song, "Stop the Bleeding," on her MySpace page, producer and session keyboardist Jimmy Nichols signed her as the first artist on his label, Black River Records.
