Complete List Of The 2009 CMA Awards Winners

Back on Sunday, October 4, 2009, I posted my predictions for this year's 2009 CMA Awards. I was spot on in some categories, but way off on a few others. Here's a look at this year's winners. The winners are highlighted in red. What did you think of the winners? Surprises? What did they get right? and what did they get wrong? Let me hear from you...

ENTERTAINER OF THE YEAR
Kenny Chesney
Brad Paisley
George Strait
Taylor Swift
Keith Urban

I picked Keith Urban to win this, but as you'll see from my predictions, I'm not surprised at all that she won this award. Taylor's a fantastic entertainer and writer. However, as you'll see in the next category, I don't think the academy got it right on the next award.

FEMALE VOCALIST OF THE YEAR
Miranda Lambert
Martina McBride
Reba McEntire
Taylor Swift
Carrie Underwood

I predicted Taylor would win this, but not because of her singing ability, but because she's the hottest singer in any genre right now. In my opinion, the academy let their emotions get the best of them here. This award is for the best "Vocalist", and when it comes to vocals, the others are definitely more talented.

MALE VOCALIST OF THE YEAR
Kenny Chesney
Brad Paisley
Darius Rucker
George Strait
Keith Urban

I predicted Brad would win, and he did. No surprise here.

NEW ARTIST OF THE YEAR
Randy Houser
Jamey Johnson
Jake Owen
Darius Rucker
Zac Brown Band

While I predicted Darius would win this award, I was still surprised. Darius is such a pro though, and his acceptance speech was awesome. It's so nice to see an artist truly thrilled to win an award.

VOCAL GROUP OF THE YEAR
Eagles
Lady Antebellum
Little Big Town
Rascal Flatts
Zac Brown Band

I'm not sure why I thought Lady Antebellum would win this one, but I just had a feeling, and it turned out to be right. In truth, this is probably as big an upset as Taylor winning the Entertainer of the Year award. Rascal Flatts' have owned this award for years, and they had a great year. Congrats to Lady A. I'm very happy for them.

VOCAL DUO OF THE YEAR
Big & Rich
Brooks & Dunn
Joey + Rory
Montgomery Gentry
Sugarland

Brooks and Dunn would have been nice for sentimental reasons, but when it comes to duos, Sugarland is by far the hottest duo on the planet.

SINGLE OF THE YEAR
(Award goes to Artist and Producer)
“Chicken Fried”
Zac Brown Band
Produced by Keith Stegall
Atlantic Records
“I Run To You”
Lady Antebellum
Produced by Victoria Shaw and Paul Worley
Capitol Records Nashville
“In Color”
Jamey Johnson
Produced by The Kent Hardly Playboys
Mercury Nashville
“People Are Crazy”
Billy Currington
Produced by Carson Chamberlain and Billy Currington
Mercury Nashville
“Then”
Brad Paisley
Produced by Frank Rogers and Chris DuBois
Arista Nashville

This one truly surprised me. I thought Jamey Johnson's In Color might win, but I was pretty sure it would go to Brad's Then. On this one, I was way off. Lady A. came out of left field on this one. Congrats again!

ALBUM OF THE YEAR
(Award goes to Artist and Producer)
American Saturday Night
Brad Paisley
Produced by Frank Rogers and Chris DuBois
Arista Nashville
Defying Gravity
Keith Urban
Produced by Dann Huff and Keith Urban
Capitol Records Nashville
Fearless
Taylor Swift
Produced by Nathan Chapman and Taylor Swift
Big Machine Records
Love On The Inside
Sugarland
Produced by Byron Gallimore, Kristian Bush, and Jennifer Nettles
Mercury Nashville
That Lonesome Song
Jamey Johnson
Produced by The Kent Hardly Playboys
Mercury Records

I don't think anyone doubted that Taylor would win this one. When it comes to selling records, Taylor is king (or queen to be P.C. about it)

SONG OF THE YEAR
(Award goes to Songwriter(s))
“Chicken Fried”
Zac Brown/Wyatt Durrette
“I Told You So”
Randy Travis
“In Color”
Jamey Johnson/Lee Thomas Miller/James Otto
“People Are Crazy”
Bobby Braddock/Troy Jones
“Then”
Brad Paisley/Chris DuBois/Ashley Gorley

I don't think this one came as a surprise to many. I wanted People Are Crazy to win, but that's just because I love the chorus. Jamey, Lee and James deserved this one. In Color is a great song.

MUSICAL EVENT OF THE YEAR
(Award goes to each Artist)
“Cowgirls Don’t Cry”
Brooks & Dunn featuring Reba McEntire
Arista Nashville
“Down The Road”
Kenny Chesney (with Mac McAnally)
Blue Chair Records, LLC & BNA Records
“Everything But Quits”
Lee Ann Womack (duet with George Strait)
MCA Nashville
“I Told You So”
Carrie Underwood featuring Randy Travis
19 Recordings/Arista Nashville
“Old Enough”
The Raconteurs featuring Ricky Skaggs and Ashley Monroe
Third Man Records/Warner Bros. Records
“Start A Band”
Brad Paisley (duet with Keith Urban)
Arista Nashville

This one surprised me. I thought Carrie and Randy would win, but I'm extremely happy for Brad and Keith. They did a great job on this song, and I'm glad Keith won something. I just wish they had presented this award live on the show.

MUSIC VIDEO OF THE YEAR
(Award goes to Artist and Director)
“Boots On”
Randy Houser
Directed by Eric Welch
“Love Story”
Taylor Swift
Directed by Trey Fanjoy
“People Are Crazy”
Billy Currington
Directed by The Brads
“Start A Band”
Brad Paisley (duet with Keith Urban)
Directed by Jim Shea
“Troubadour”
George Strait
Directed by Trey Fanjoy

Again, I think everyone knew Taylor would win this one.

MUSICIAN OF THE YEAR
Eddie Bayers– Drums
Paul Franklin – Steel Guitar
Dann Huff – Guitar
Brent Mason – Guitar
Mac McAnally – Guitar

My pick was Dann Huff because of his 80's rock roots, but Mac McAnally was probably the obvious choice.

I love Carrie Underwood and think she's a fantastic singer and great person, but she deserves my "Worst Moment of the Night" award for her comment at the very end of the show. A lot of people had probably already turned the channel or stopped watching, so they might not have heard it. Here's how it went, "How 'bout that?" said Brad Paisley after Taylor accepted the, Entertainer of the Year award. "Nineteen-years-old...Congratulations, Taylor. What a night. I can't even imagine a better..."

"And how were we? We were awesome!" interrupted Carrie. Not Carrie's best moment. But hey, we all make mistakes, and this just happened to be one of them. Unfortunately, self-promotion never looks good, no matter what the circumstances...
