Today is an important day in history for Alabama. On this day back in 1980, RCA released Alabama's My Home's In Alabama album, which was the band's third album, but first to place on the Country album charts. The album would produce three top 20 country hits including two number ones (Tennessee River and Why Lady Why). My favorite song from the album was the title track My Home's In Alabama. It peaked at #17 on the charts. To honor the anniversary of the release of this great album, here's Alan Jackson covering My Home's In Alabama. Enjoy!
On this day, Alabama, Jo Dee Messina, The Bellamy Brothers and Aaron Tippin all scored number one hits on the Billboard Hot Country charts. Here's a look at their number ones.
In 1998, Jo Dee Messina hit number one on this day with one of her biggest hits called Bye Bye:
In 1992, Aaron Tippin hit number one on this day with There Ain't Nothin' Wrong With The Radio:
In 1987, The Bellamy Brothers took Kids Of The Baby Boom to number one on this day as well:
And, on this day back in 1981, Alabama hit number one with their hit single Old Flame. Enjoy!
On this day back in 1984, Alabama's ode to the American truck driver parked itself in the number one spot on the Billboard Hot Country charts. Enjoy this flashback to one of Alabama's many, many number one hits.
Song of the South, like Skynyrd's Sweet Home Alabama, is almost like an anthem for those of us who grew up in Alabama. On this day back in 1989, it became Alabama's 24th number one hit on the Billboard Hot Country charts. They would follow this one up with another number one hit for If I Had You. Enjoy!
The photo below is from a March 2009 issue of People magazine. Looks simple enough, huh? What I find intriguing is what happened behind the scenes of this photo. According to RolandNote.com, on this day last year, while the photoshoot was going on, a tornado warning was issued for Fort Payne, AL, and Randy and eight others who were involved in the photo shoot headed down to Randy's basement and rode out the warning. Luckily, no tornadoes touched down, but it does bring a different perspective on the photo, doesn't it? You can see more of the photos from the shoot on this page on People.com.

For today's #1 song flashback, here's Alabama performing their number one song Love in the First Degree on the Barbrall Mandrell and the Mandrell Sisters show in 1981. Love in the First Degree went to number one on this day back in 1981. Also, here's Vince Gill's official music video for Don't Let Our Love Start Slipping Away, which went to number one on the Billboard Hot Country charts on this day back in 1992. Enjoy!
While Taylor is unquestionably the most popular country/pop artist in the world right now, and deserves everything's she's gotten this year, let's not forget that today is also the birthday of the lead singer of the undisputed kings of country music, Alabama. Randy Owen was born on this day back in 1949 in Fort Payne, Alabama.
I'll tell you a funny story about Alabama. When I was ten years old back in 1980, I checked the mail one day, and one of the things in there was a cassette promotion for five cassettes for a penny. Most of you are probably too young to remember these types of mail offers, but they used to flood mailboxes all the time. I secretly took the offer and filled it out and taped a penny to the form and mailed it back. The #1 cassette I wanted was Alabama's My Home's In Alabama. When the cassette's came in the mail, my mother was furious that (1) I had ordered them without her knowing, and (2) they had actually accepted an order from me, a ten-year old kid. I remember her calling them and blasting them for accepting the order.
The funny thing about this story is I loved Alabama because they were my mom's favorite band, and she had been wanting the tape. After she berated me for doing it, I gave her the tape, and she almost cried because she realized I had gotten it primarily for her. I've been a huge Alabama fan ever since. In honor of Randy's birthday, here's the song that caused me to want to get the tape. It's Alabama's My Home's In Alabama, which for those of you who follow this blog know is where I was born. Enjoy and happy birthday Randy!
As your afternoon winds down, how about a little Mountain Music from Alabama. I loved this song back when I was a kid. Mountain Music was Alabama's 6th number one country single in a row back in 1982. They would go on to record 15 more number one hits in a row before 1987's Tar Top broke the streak when it peaked at #7. They would go on to score 31 number one singles during their career. That's unbelievable! Enjoy my favorite Alabama song, Mountain Music.
Alabama holds the record for #1 hits with 42 #1 singles. One of those hits was Song of the South from 1989. In November of last year, Alabama chose Cracker Barrel as the exclusive distributer of their latest album called The Last Stand, which was a live CD composed of songs from their last tour in 2003. If you'd like to pick up a copy of the CD, visit your local Cracker Barrel or visit CrackerBarrel.com. Enjoy!
